Introduction to Management Accounting

Organise a Factory Visit and Watch the Television

Suppose you don't work in an organisation that produces a tangible product? Well, you can always organise a factory visit to somewhere nearby. Just about every town and village has some industry, trade or profession working somewhere within walking or driving distance.

There are a lot of programmes on television these days that can help with our understanding of the management accounting aspects of production processes. Take a look at programmes where Jack or Norm build things such as tables, chairs, cupboards, work benches … and make detailed notes of what he does, how he does it, the tools and machinery he uses … look for other issues such as lighting, heating, sub contracting (where Norm asks a friend to do part of the job for him) … then think in terms of the management accounting aspects of what has happened. Just like mini projects 1 and 2.

Watch those gardening programmes where they carry out a facelift of a complete garden from start to finish … then think in terms of the management accounting aspects of what has happened. Just like mini projects 1 and 2.

Even cookery programmes can be useful: especially where Rupert or Algernon is putting together an entire menu for a dinner party for 10 or more people … then think in terms of the management accounting aspects of what has happened. Just like mini projects 1 and 2.

All really good stuff: very valuable things to appreciate!

Following this advice will enhance your understanding of Mini Projects 1 and 2
